Here's one way to spend the winter days...

I would much rather be in Florida somewhere, anywhere, playing golf right now, but that isn't going to happen so I had to come up with another way to pass these winter days.  You can only cut holes in the pond so many times, only to watch it freeze over again in a day or two at the most.

Realizing that I had not read all of Tom Clancy's books, I thought this would be a great time to round them up and see what they were all about.  As it ended up, I had 6 of them yet to read so I made my way to a couple of book places and plunked down some cash.  Realizing that these novels would run about $26 new, I looked around a little at the second-hand book stores (only had paperbacks), and such stores as Ollie's (great place to look for stuff that is cheap), and Dollar General (they didn't have anything but comic books and word search stuff).  I only used the real book stores as a last resort.  I got 5 of the 6 in hardback (eyes aren't up to the small print in paperbacks anymore) and paid full price for only one (the rest ranged from $2.50 to $12.00).

I managed to slip in three other books in the middle of all of this too (Things that Matter by Krauthammer, Humor in Uniform, Reader's Digest, and Unbroken by Hillenbrand).  All in all, I have finished 5 of the 6 Clancy books (4,304 pages) and the one left (+/- 800 pages) will finish that session.  Not too bad.

One of the things I liked about Clancy's books is that they were all currently relevant to me.  There were several plots and places that were spun in the books that I was familiar with (to some extent) from my Army days.  That made the books sail along even quicker.

The next phase on my plate is a trio of books by Jeff Shaara (Gods and Generals, The Last Full Measure, and A Blaze of Glory).  Gods and Generals will only be a review as I read that one quite a while ago.  Haven't fed my Civil War fixation for a while so this will get me by for a little bit.

And I would not be truthful if I didn't tell you that I also have Field and Stream's Fishing Guide, Fishing Skills You Need  yet to wade through (pun intended!).  So my reading habits are not all mystery and bloodshed, although the fish (God forbid they don't make it through the winter ice) might not see it this way when it's time to break out the rods and tackle and invite the neighbor kids over to have at 'em.

Oh, and one other thing ... on our last trip to NY, I read a whole hand full of "Thomas the Train" books with Little Heath (some many times).  So between those and the Star Wars books and the Pirate adventure books that Quinn likes, I have really expanded my literary outlook on life.  And if the truth be known, the best ones of all are the ones I read with the boys.
Heath and I reading an electronic book about Elmo.  Can't show one about me reading to Quinn because the Pirate adventure books I read to him were done at bedtime and didn't want to keep him awake with a flash.

There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all. (Jacqueline Kennedy)

Hey......you know what...I guess could still read some in the evenings in Florida when I am not playing golf.  What a thought.  Stay tuned.

Always read something that will make you look good if you die with it sitting in the middle of your lap.
